The violence of armed conflicts and the instability it fuels in a number of African countries contribute to seriously destabilise healthcare systems that are already fragile and relatively inaccessible. Simultaneously, the high prevalence of infectious diseases in the continent such as HIV, hepatitis or tuberculosis is raising significant public health concerns, as well as the devastating effects caused by the consumption of hard drugs, gender-based violence and a reduced access to sexual and reproductive care.
These emergencies and humanitarian crises in Africa are creating basic needs for health services that local resources often cannot meet on their own. Médecins du Monde is helping them strengthen their ability to respond to crises and develop independence in a sustainable way.
