We welcome psychologists wishing to do humanitarian work at different stages of their career. As a student you could do an internship with one of our programmes in France, then once you’re qualified you could join us as a paid employee or a volunteer.
YOUR TASKS AS A PSYCHOLOGIST WORKING WITH A HUMANITARIAN ORGANISATION
-
If you work on one of our international programmes, the role of psychologist involves training and organising a unit for the provision of medical and psychological services, working in partnership with local professionals. Positions for psychologists on our programmes outside France are usually salaried posts in the country concerned, for which recruitment is carried out locally.
-
If you work in France, you will provide consultations and lead group sessions at our reception, care and support centres. Most of the psychologists working on our programmes in France are volunteers, although some are paid employees.
REQUIREMENTS
- You will be representing Médecins du Monde so you should be seen to uphold our values and put them into practice.
- If you work outside France, we ask that you have a good command of English or Spanish.
- You will be working with people who are in very precarious situations and in multicultural environments and security contexts that may sometimes be stressful, so you will need to have the capacity to adapt.
- Patience, the ability to work independently and being a great team player will be valuable assets.
- You should be comfortable communicating verbally and in writing and you should be welcoming in your approach, with excellent listening skills.
- As you will be involved in different projects, you should be familiar with various methodologies and demonstrate good analytical skills and the ability to see the overall picture.
GOOD TO KNOW
Depending on the programme, prior experience in the medical and social sphere or humanitarian sector may be an advantage.
YOUR FUTURE PROSPECTS AT MDM
Because we are committed to long-term collaboration with our partners and believe that staff who have had practical experience on the ground are an asset for any organisation, we offer our humanitarian psychologists the opportunity to progress to more senior roles, such as mental health coordinator or technical advisor to the Health and Advocacy Department.
