Medical coordinators are qualified doctors, nurses, midwives or possibly pharmacists and have had extensive practical experience on the ground.
MEET YAKOUBA,
A MEDICAL COORDINATOR IN MALI
What’s interesting is the process of identifying needs, with everyone involved in the project contributing.
YOUR TASKS
If you work on one of our international programmes, the role of medical coordinator involves overseeing the design, implementation and operational management of healthcare access programmes. You will be responsible for the medical services delivered by the programme and will work with local stakeholders.
REQUIREMENTS
You will be representing Médecins du Monde so you should be seen to uphold our values and put them into practice.
If you work outside France, we ask that you have a good command of English or Spanish.
You will be living and working in multicultural environments and in security contexts that may sometimes be difficult or stressful, so you will need to have the capacity to adapt.
You will be responsible for a team which might be quite large, so you will need good managerial skills, as well as being a great team player.
The ability to think systematically and see the overall picture and excellent analytical skills in the healthcare context will be a valuable asset in the coordination of often complex projects.
You will have to develop and implement detailed procedures and complex programmes so good organisational skills and an ability to prioritise will certainly be an advantage.
You will be responsible for project monitoring, evaluation and reporting for which you will need strong technical skills.
You should be comfortable communicating verbally and in writing and have the ability to employ diplomacy when required.
GOOD TO KNOW
Some areas of specialist knowledge, such as public health, mental health and sexual and reproductive health, could be particularly useful.
YOUR FUTURE PROSPECTS AT MDM
Because we are committed to long-term collaboration with our partners and believe that staff who have had practical experience on the ground are an asset for any organisation, we offer our medical coordinators the opportunity to progress to more senior roles, such as health advisor, site coordinator and then general coordinator, desk officer or head of department.
