No specific training is required to become a logistician in the humanitarian sector. We seek to give all candidates a chance, but skills in logistics management and procurement are essential.
-
Whether you work in France or on one of our programmes abroad, the role of a logistician in the humanitarian sector is to organise the team’s living and working arrangements, run logistics programmes (in construction, rehabilitation or sanitation) and participate in drawing up and applying safety rules.
REQUIREMENTS FOR A LOGISTICIAN WORKING FOR A HUMANITARIAN ORGANISATION
- You will be representing Médecins du Monde so you should be seen to uphold our values and put them into practice.
- If you work outside France, we ask that you have a good command of English or Spanish.
- You will be living and working in multicultural environments and in security contexts that may sometimes be difficult or stressful, so you will need to have the capacity to adapt.
- Excellent needs analysis skills and the ability to assess security contexts will be a valuable asset in the coordination of often complex projects.
- You will be responsible for a team which might be quite large, so you will need good training and management skills, as well as being a great team player. You will have to ensure that the rules for safety and security you draw up are respected.
- You will be responsible for the organisation’s logistics procedures and procurement, so you will need to be familiar with the processes involved.
- You will be liaising with our main funders and so you should be familiar with their procedures.
- To manage all these different dimensions simultaneously, a practical attitude, the ability to work independently, a rigorous approach and good organisational skills will be of great value.
GOOD TO KNOW
Depending on the programme, a background in humanitarian logistics may be an advantage, as well as prior experience in the humanitarian sector. In addition, specialist knowledge of particular areas, such as construction, rehabilitation or sanitation, could be very useful.
YOUR FUTURE PROSPECTS AT MDM
Because we are committed to long-term collaboration with our partners and believe that staff who have had practical experience on the ground are an asset for any organisation, we offer logisticians who work with us the opportunity to progress to more senior roles, such as supply manager / procurement manager, logistics coordinator and then site coordinator, general coordinator or head of department.
