THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The General Assembly is the organisation’s highest decision-making body. It elects members of the Board for three years.

THE JOINT BODIES

The Joint Bodies refer above all to the General Assembly (GA), which brings together all the members of the organisation once a year. This is where MdM community life can be fully expressed, where major debates take place, and where social missions and motions are the subject of great discussions between everyone in the MdM community. The GA votes on the strategic and financial report and elects the administrators.

The Executive Committee meets on a weekly basis, bringing together members of the Bureau, the operational directors and the programme management team (volunteers and employees at headquarters and in the field). The Executive Committee is at the very heart of the mission process, implementing the decisions of the Board as well as approving projects after hearing opinions from the geopolitical and thematic groups and regional colleges.

THE BOARD

The organisation is administered by a Board consisting of twelve members. It defines the overall direction of the organisation, and submits its proposals to the GA. It guarantees the organisation is transparent to all stakeholders, particularly users and the public authorities. It guides the overall direction of MdM as defined by the General Assembly and exercises its authority over all the organisation’s activities. The implementation of decisions and management of the organisation are delegated by the Board to the Executive Director.

REGIONAL OFFICES

The regional offices are located across 14 French regions and are responsible for carrying out regional missions defined by the Board.

The regional college and the regional office delegate report to the Board and are responsible for implementing MdM’s mission statement in their area. Elected every three years, the regional offices represent regional community life (political, financial and social missions).

THE CONSULTATIVE ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE

Groups are created around a programme theme (thematic group) or a geographic region (geopolitical group). These groups bring together the heads of missions (volunteer Board delegates) as well as anyone else interested in the subject. The role of the groups is to ensure consistency between the MdM missions in the region and compliance with our mission statement. These groups are the permanent point of interaction between the front-line (civil society, activists, the field, etc.) and the decision-making bodies within the organisation (the Board and Executive Committee).

The groups propose strategies and priorities for intervention. They play a key role in terms of context analysis, choosing modes of intervention, as well as preparing our advocacy work and priorities which are then submitted to the Board for approval.

The composition of the National Consultative Committee is decided by the Board, the heads of groups and two representatives of each regional office. The National Consultative Committee is a place for discussion and debate among all bodies in the organisation (Board, regional offices, geopolitical and thematic groups, directors of the organisation and invited guests), as well as a place to discuss proposals.

THE PERMANENT OPERATIONAL STRUCTURE

This is led by the General Directorate and consists of the International Operations Directorate (divided into geographic units), the French Operations Directorate, the Health and Advocacy Directorate, the Communication and Development Directorate, the Human Resources Directorate, and the Finance Directorate.

THE INTERNATIONAL NETWORK

The international network of Médecins du Monde includes 16 organisations which, on the basis of a shared charter, follow the objectives of caring and bearing witness.

In addition, the 11 Médecins du Monde organisations in Europe conduct joint advocacy work with the European Union and the Council of Europe.

WHAT IS A MEMBER?

Joining Médecins du Monde is a commitment in itself. By agreeing to its principles, culture and operation of the organisation, members want to contribute to the life of Médecins du Monde and participate in its decisions.

Members vote at the General Assembly, at the regional assemblies and can stand for the Board as well as for regional colleges.

HOW TO JOIN?

Only people who have contributed to the work of Médecins du Monde (actions in our programmes in France or abroad, volunteers) can become members of the organisation. Membership is granted by the Board.
